Ghostwriter Poppy Hayes is a rising star in her profession, known for crafting riveting memoirs which unveil the hidden lives of the rich and famous. When wealthy, widowed socialite Mariette Winter hires Poppy to tell her story—a tale that may expose long-kept secrets and lies, and surely anger a few of Mariette’s friends and former colleagues—Poppy accepts. Arriving at her employer’s private home on Winterhouse Island off the coast of New England, Poppy is eager  to begin work on the memoir. But shortly after Mariette’s guests begin to turn up, presumably to help fill in details about their hostess’s tumultuous past, a dead body is discovered, and Poppy suspects there may be more than just metaphorical skeletons in the many closets of the Winterhouse mansion.

Before considering others, Mariette asked her grandson, Professor Thomas Nordwich, to compose her memoir. The author of a popular nonfiction book on mysterious deaths throughout history, Thomas is an ideal candidate but declines the offer. Though he loves his grandmother and wants to help, Thomas knows that revealing her past for public entertainment will further unravel the relationship between Mariette and Thomas’s mother. After listening to his grandmother’s frequent allusions to mysterious dangers from her history, and secrets that could “get people killed,” Thomas also worries the memoir may threaten his grandmother’s life.

As reluctant as he is to accept Poppy’s presence as his grandmother’s guest—not to mention the ill-advised book she’s agreed to work on—Thomas can’t help his attraction to the whip-smart ghostwriter. And when a murder takes place on remote Winterhouse Island, Thomas and Poppy put their shared curiosity and investigative skills to work to expose dangerous truths, before a raging blizzard traps them all in the killer’s path.
